This technique can be considered basic or, if you will, key. Theoretically, you can do without a smooth straight line in the beginning stages of decoration, but it's still good to gradually master it. You'll encounter it in various modifications during decoration and use it constantly.
Learn the line; you'll often and gladly use it in various modifications.
Apart from contours, it's the basis for the successful realization of many, especially lace, patterns. The prerequisite for the best possible result is, of course, perfect elastic and stretchy icing, which will help you create both concrete and realistic patterns and motifs (e.g., houses, flowers, or animals), as well as abstract patterns, whose beauty stands out on a free gingerbread surface and on surfaces covered with white or transparent icing.

Straight line
In the case of lines, the decoration technique is also extremely important. The basic rule is to guide the line through the air and place it on the gingerbread (perníčky), which means that the decorating cone doesn't touch the surface at all. Only in this way will you achieve a smooth, uninterrupted line.
Again, at this point, I want to remind you that holding the gingerbread (perníček) in your hand while decorating will really help you master especially long lines. Coordination and interplay of both hands (and believe me, you can master it too) will support your skill and soon add both confidence and elegance to your work.

Tip for you
All linear elements and patterns that you master in this chapter can also be successfully used in a finer filigree variant.
